#6 Alabama would enter the battle for the “The Standard” against #2 Georgia to main event week six of the college football season. A battle that has always been determined by inches continues the same tradition with this one coming down to the hair. For a majority of the game Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton would thread the needle and make smart passes to keep his team in the competition.
The first touchdown of the game would come in the second quarter with Stockton throwing a 20-yard pass to London Humphreys. We’d also see Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell come to play, with the Bulldogs unable to contain him as he rushed for first downs throughout the matchup. Running back EJ Crowell would end the first half with a rushing touchdown, bouncing off his blockers to give the Crimson Tide a 14-10 lead.
In the second half we’d see Gunner Stockton prove his toughness once again with a rushing touchdown where he would get obliterated by defenders just to stand up like nothing happened. The deciding play of the game would be a muffed punt where Georgia would retain possession, leading to a chip shot field goal for the Bulldogs to take the lead and never relinquish it, ending the game 20-17 in their favor.
#10 LSU continues to not impress under Lane Kiffin as they head into their matchup against Kentucky. Though unranked, Kentucky has continued to show potential since their week 2 loss against Alabama where in the first half they maintained control over the Crimson Tide. Kentucky would take the lead in the first quarter after a 77-yard rush by running back CJ Baxter would put them in position to score.
The Wildcats would keep the momentum going in the second with a huge punt return for 55 yards from Brock Coffman, which drew controversy from the possibility of him stepping out of the field during the play. The Tigers would battle and exchange the lead with Kentucky for a majority of the matchup until a tied score at the end of the fourth brought overtime.
This heart attack game would be put to rest in overtime as Wildcat quarterback Kenny Minchey responded to Sam Leavitt’s rushing touchdown with a passing touchdown of his own followed by a successful two-point conversion to seal the victory for Kentucky, 35-34. Heading into week 7, LSU can be knocked out of the college football rankings with a loss against Mississippi State.
#21 UCLA would look to continue their undefeated streak against ranked competition in #13 Oregon. Early in the game we’d see a costly fumble from UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava put Oregon running back Jordon Davison in position to score on the 1-yard line. On both sides we’d watch as starting quarterbacks underperformed and combined for a total of 0 touchdowns to 4 interceptions.
Unfortunately, Nico Iamaleava would tear his ACL in the second quarter after a disgusting sack, effectively ending his season early, and causing Ty Dieffenbach to take over for UCLA. Over on the Ducks side, quarterback Dylan Raiola would be benched for his abysmal play, giving up his job to Brock Thomas.
Both backup quarterbacks would make do in their given situations as the game would be determined by the turnover margin where the Ducks would lose with 7 turnovers to the Bruins' 3. To mark the end of the game Oregon wide receiver Evan Stewart would make a 44-yard play to gain a touchdown for the Ducks, but a failed two-point conversion would secure UCLA the 17-15 win in an ugly showing.
#1 Texas and Oklahoma would face off in the newest edition of the red river rivalry. The first big play of the game would occur early in the first with a strip sack from Colin Simmons who looks to keep his projection of being a top 5 NFL draft pick. Strong performances from opposing defensive fronts would be an ongoing factor within this game affecting both quarterbacks.
Facing the pressure Texas quarterback Arch Manning would leave the pocket then off balance throw a jet to receiver Cam Coleman midway through the first quarter to put the Longhorns on the board first. Like his teammate Collin Simmons, Cam Coleman is making an argument to be a top prospect in next year's draft, with him possibly being the best big body receiver in his class, aside from Jeremiah Smith of course.
Texas would end the half on top 17-7 with a lead that would soon be chipped away. After a field goal from the Sooners, Arch Manning would throw a meatball sub to defensive back Peyton Bowen that would lead to a rushing touchdown from Sooner running back Lloyd Avant would tie up the game. Manning would make up for his mistake in the middle of the fourth with a 15-yard pass to Jermaine Bishop Jr. to even the score.
Soon after the quarterback would have possession once again with the chance to end the game but would rid himself of all the promising play he displayed in the first half of the game with another interception that would set up the Sooners in great position to beat the #1 team in the nation with a field goal, to end the match 27-24.
