Fresh off the number 2 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, the San Antonio Spurs added another piece to their already young core in Dylan Harper from Rutgers. Later in the draft they took another 6 foot 6 forward named Carter Bryant from Arizona to help solidify what they are building for years to come. Pairing these two players with their already set core of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama the Spurs are not only looking towards the future but are also looking to win now.
Back in 1997, the luck of the lottery fell into the franchises hands as they were able to select Tim Duncan with the number 1 overall pick. Little did we know this would be the start of a dynasty leading to him and the Spurs winning 5 championships in his illustrious 19 year career. The same can be said over 20 years later when the Spurs once again landed the number 1 pick and drafted a never before seen archetype of a player in Victor Wembanyama.
At 7 '5 with the ability to play on the perimeter, dribble, shoot threes and alter shots that appear to be wide open, we are witnessing something that the league has never seen.
What’s exciting about this current team is that they still play with the same fundamentals and culture that was built almost 20 years ago with their former coach Gregg Popovich. With Mitch Johnson at the helm who was a former assistant of Popovich, he is all about keeping Spurs culture and their winning ways alive. Not only do winning ways come from the coach but players take the same mentality as their superstar player and that is just one of many things that makes Victor special. This can be shown by his calm demeanor in his pre and post game conferences, his unique offensive training which included going to the Shaolin Temple in China to become a Shaolin Monk.
He is all about staying grounded, true to his identity, and most importantly winning is all that matters to him.
Star guards De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle bring a dynamic 1-2 punch to the court every night that has opposing defenses wondering how they are going to guard each one of them. Fox uses his “fox like” quickness to get up and down the floor while Castle uses his bigger frame for a guard to bump off defenders and get into the paint at will. They will certainly be one of the scariest guard combos for years to come. Currently sitting at 2nd place in a tough, loaded Western Conference at 40-16 we must stop questioning if they are too young but rather if their championship window is officially opened. Having already beat the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder 4 out of 5 times this season, they have shown they can not only compete but can also beat the best. You can tell that every time this team steps out on the floor, they stay true to their identity and don’t let changes within the flow of the game affect who they are.
San Antonio isn’t only preparing themselves to win in the future but they are also putting the league on notice showing that they are in win now mode.
Structure, chemistry, and being poised to take a big leap are just few of what the Spurs have demonstrated this season.
As long as their superstar Wembanyama is at the helm they are ready to cement themselves as the most dangerous team in the West and something that longtime Spurs fans have been waiting for which is a second dynasty.
