Director of Obsession: Curry Barker during the World Premiere.

Inde Navarrette: actress and breakout star of Obsession captivating audiences everywhere.

Michael Johnston: actor and co-star of Obsession, playing the man Nikki becomes obsessed with, opposite Inde Navarrette.

There has only been one movie that the whole world has been obsessed with, and fittingly, that movie is Obsession. Created by Director Curry Barker in 2024 under a budget of approximately $750,000, the film would later be sold to Focus Features for $15 million, where it found its theatrical release in 2026. Since then, it has totaled a whopping $442.93 million in the box office.

Not only has this movie been a financial success, but has also changed and set a new standard for the modern horror genre. The film originally follows Bear, a lonely and depressed young man as he fails to express his love towards Nikki. Quickly, the movie takes a shift from this common story to explore the depravities and dangers of unrequited love and toxic relationships.

In essence, what makes this movie so unique and creates a different kind of horror than what we’ve ever seen is its familiarity.

To some degree, we have all witnessed or done things shown in the film such as stalking a crushes Instagram page, receiving mixed signals, or fantasizing about a perfect dream relationship. With the wall between fact and fiction feeling so nonexistent, we forget that the events of this film aren't real and begin to feel like a character forced to watch the unfolding chaos in front of us.

A factor that makes Obsession so unforgettable are the incredible performances given by mostly unknown actors and actresses.

Michael Johnston’s ability to gain sympathy early in the film through his sheepish and timid performance makes the moment when we realize Bear is a selfish manipulator hit harder. Costars like Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Darin Toonder excel in their roles, each emphasizing different aspects of Bear’s character.

But undeniably, what elevates this film from great to an all-time classic is Inde Navarette's performance as Nikki, which has established her as a horror icon and new scream queen alongside the likes of Winona Ryder and Neve Campbell.

To be able to make the characters of “Nicki” and ”Not Nicki” so distinctly different shows the thought Navarette put into this role. With something so subtle as her eyes, we can tell which version of Nicki we are looking at. Along with Navarette’s phenomenal control of facial expressions and body movement when she does gesture a regular person would do but adds little things like holding her smile too long or swaying her arms while walking like a puppet it feels so slightly abnormal that it makes your skin crawl.

Curry Barker’s road to directing Obsession has been nothing but unique as well.

Barker originates from YouTube as the co-creator, along with actor Cooper Tomlinson, of the channel “that's a bad idea.” The channel experimentation between horror and comedy parallels the dark humor and absurdity we see in Obsession. Along with many other youtubers like Markiplier and Kane Parsons, Barker has found himself successfully making the transition from YouTube to film, creating a new pipeline for future filmmakers.

Now as one of the hottest young minds in Hollywood, Barker’s next film will be a supernatural horror movie titled Anything but Ghosts, starring Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul and Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard. Barker is also set to write and direct the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. We will soon see if the director is able to continuously bring something new to cinema like he did with Obsession.
