The Kobe 3s are a model I have only experienced in low top form. Nike released the Kobe 3 originally in 2008. Eric Avar took the reins back on this silhouette. In terms of legacy the Kobe 3 is a basketball shoe is a underrated model in the line. The upper drew from a basketball net which is pretty creative. For some reason I think of spiderman and his webs when I look at the upper.
The upper is actually made of an injection molded polyurethane web that no signature model had worn before. There was no swoosh on the side panel, only at the heel, wrapping around like a signature. Underneath, Zoom Air units and a carbon fiber plate did the work. This the same combination that carried Kobe through the cuts and pivots and dead stops that made him impossible to guard.
Nike arranged the outsole traction in diamond shapes which is a tribute to Natalia, Kobe's daughter. Her middle name is Diamante.
The 2007-08 season is where the shoe earned its place. Kobe Bryant won his first MVP award that year. He made First Team All-NBA and First Team All-Defense. He helped anchor Team USA's Redeem Team ahead of Beijing. Kobe was everywhere that season, running everything, and the Kobe 3 stayed on his feet through nearly all of it. On Christmas Day against the Suns, he wore a yellow and purple pair that lit up under the Staples Center lights.
At the All-Star Game that February, he laced up a deep red and gold colorway despite a torn ligament in his pinky. The Lakers made the Finals that June and ran into the Celtics. They lost eventually lost in six games. For a while, the Kobe 3 carried that loss with him.
Nike leaned into it years later. When the shoe came back in 2013 as part of the Prelude Pack, seven models celebrated career milestones. The Kobe 3 was the one exception. Its black colorway came wrapped in a swirling fresco graphic, built to visualize the psychological torment Kobe felt after that Finals loss. Every other shoe in the pack pointed at a win. This one pointed at the thing that still bothered him.
The Kobe 3 never got the spotlight the 4, 5, or 6 eventually got. Those shoes changed what a basketball sneaker could look like on court, and they get the credit for it now. The 3 rarely comes up in that conversation, even though it came first.
It was a smart move to protro this model in low top form. Nike gave the Kobe 3 its Protro treatment in August 2025, releasing the Halo colorway on Kobe's birthday in an all white finish. Full length Zoom Air replaced the two smaller units from the original with cushlon foam went into the midsole.
Jalen Brunson was the first player to debut the Kobe 3 Quartz. Also an all star pair called the warning labels released at the grove in NIke. The nicest pairs i seen tho were player exclusives for march madness and china. One of the coolest protro's to come out was a ice blue Kobe 3 during christmas. If that colorway came out in a low top form it was be a massive hit. I hope Nike reads this has a global release.
