With the return of the college football season, many contenders look to dust off their cleats and test the waters in week one. Though the schedule may not contain matchups between the best programs, it is still a chance to see glimpses of ones who by the end of season can stand atop the college football world. So, let’s take a look at the top storylines to come out of this past week.
Of course, we have to speak first about the most entertaining game of the week, Ole Miss's victory over Louisville, 41-38. While both teams entered this matchup ranked in the top 25, the pressure Louisville was able to put on the Rebels came as a huge surprise. The quarterback Lincoln Kienholz’ dual threat ability along with precise passes helped the Cardinals stay on schedule while Tre Richardson’s blazing speed has put him in the conversation of wide receivers to watch this year.
Though it was a massive achievement for the team to hold Kewan Lacy to only 60 yards, if they want to become this year's Indiana, their passing defense must take the next step. Over at Ole Miss, the controversial Trinidad Chambliss meanwhile has put himself back into Heisman contention for this season with his 3 passing touchdown and 336 passing yard performance. Deuce Alexander looks to be a key target for the quarterback with his 159 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.
I don’t know what’s more embarrassing; Michigan barely beating the MAC’s Western Michigan or the Big 10 conference’s blatant rigging of the game’s finish. During the finish we’d watch as Bryce Underwood would fail to complete a game winning hail mary as the clock ran out until mysteriously another second would be added to the score clock gifting the quarterback another chance to throw a hail mary and win the game 13-12 against the Broncos who had already believed they won the game. The fact that the No.16 ranked Wolverines paid $1.5 million to barely beat an unranked MAC team should be a loss in itself.
The former national champion contender, Miami Hurricanes make their return with a perfect performance against Stanford, winning 45-6. In his week 1 debut as a Cane, Darian Mensah completed an absurd 27 of 30 passing attempts ending the game with 401 yards and 5 touchdowns. Malachi Toney was also a big part in the murder of the now Andrew Luck led program with his performance leading the NCAA in receiving yards with 234 alongside 3 touchdowns.
The newest PAC 12 team, Boise State Broncos, continues to rise amongst college football programs with an excellent performance in a loss against the Oregon Ducks, 27-34. Maddux Madsen came to complete passing for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns with significant help from Rasean Jones’ 76 receiving yards. But there is a reason why Dante Moore was expected to be the No. 2 overall pick in last year's draft as he outperformed the Broncos with 3 touchdowns of his own with 378 yards under a 75% completion rate. Offensive talent from Oregon like Jordon Davison, Jeremiah McClellan, and Dakorien Moore proved to be viable options for Moore, and it will be interesting to see who emerges as the top option in Oregon.
